Over one third of S2 pupils are failing to meet numeracy standards, a report has shown.

The Scottish survey of literacy and numeracy has shown that across school years numeracy levels have declined.

A total of 36% of S2 pupils are "not yet working within their level" as set out by the Scottish Government's curriculum for excellence.

The survey shows across income brackets - the most deprived, the middle and the least deprived - no group was performing better at three stages tested than they did in 2011.

The survey looks at the performances of pupils in P4, P7 and S2.

The report shows the attainment gap between pupils from the least and most deprived areas in numeracy standards has widened from 2011 to 2015.

A total of 10,500 pupils from 2,200 schools took part in the survey.
