The referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union has seen a number of angry clashes between the Leave and Remain campaigns.

As part of STV's documentary Everything You Wanted to Know About the EU (But Were Too Afraid to Ask), our political editor Bernard Ponsonby spoke to key players, past and present, from the pro-EU and anti-EU sides.

One such conversation took place between two Scottish and British political heavyweights who are at odds on the EU. Former Labour Chancellor Lord Darling and former Conservative secretary of state for Scotland Lord Forsyth had a spirited exchange on sovereignty, tax and political union.

But it was nevertheless a polite, civilised exchange, free from the rancour which has characterised much of the debate so far.

We couldn't fit the whole discussion into tonight's programme, so we present it here for those eager for a grown-up conversation on the decision the UK will make on June 23.

Watch Everything You Wanted to Know About the EU (But Were Too Afraid to Ask) at 10.30pm on STV and the STV Player.
