The deputy leader of South Lanarkshire Council has been charged with a breach of the peace.

Jackie Burns, 52, who has been a Labour councillor for Larkhall since 2007, has been suspended from the Labour Party.

The alleged incident took place last month.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed a 52-year-old man has been charged over a breach of the peace.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office said: "The procurator fiscal has received a report concerning a 52-year-old man in connection with an alleged incident said to have occurred on September 18, 2016.

"The report remains under consideration."

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: "The council has been informed that councillor Burns has been suspended by his party, and the council leader has advised that councillor Burns will cease to represent the Labour Party on the council while he is suspended."
