Paul Nuttall MEP has been elected as Ukip's new leader to replace Nigel Farage.

The North West MEP won 15,405 votes - 62% - in the contest among party members.

The 39-year-old has served as the Ukip's deputy leader and chairman since 2009.

Nuttall's main rival for the role Suzanne Evans came second with 2973 votes, totalling 19.3% of the vote.

Former soldier John Rees-Evans, who once claimed a gay donkey attempted to rape his horse, finished third with 2775 votes, a total of 18.1% of the total vote.

It was the second leadership contest of 2016 for the party.

Previous winner Diane James quit the job after just 18 days at the helm of the anti-EU party. She has since left the party and will sit as an independent MEP.

In his acceptance speech, Nuttall said: "The country needs a strong Ukip more than ever before. For if Ukip is to be an electoral force, there will be an impetus on Theresa May and her government to give us a real Brexit."

Farage served as interim leader while the second leadership contest took place.
