Donald Trump will become the 45th President of the United States later on Friday after taking his presidential oath with a Bible given to him by his Scottish mother.

The president-elect was presented with the bible in 1955 by his mother Mary Anne Macleod.

Ms Macleod emigrated to the United States from Lewis in 1920.

The Bible was a present for Trump after graduating from Sunday Church Primary School at First Presbyterian Church, Jamaica, New York on June 12, 1955.

During the ceremony, Trump will also hold a Bible that belonged to Abraham Lincoln.

Chairman of the presidential inaugural committee Tom Barrack said: "In his first inaugural address, President Lincoln appealed to the 'better angels of our nature'.

"As he takes the same oath of office 156 years later, president-elect Trump is humbled to place his hand on Bibles that hold special meaning both to his family and to our country."

Trump appeared with the book in a campaign video last year thanking Evangelical Christians for their support in his bid for the White House.

"My mother gave me this Bible. This very Bible many year ago," said Trump.

"It is very special to me."

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at 5pm UK time.
