The European Union's immigration rules means British authorities cannot assess if some migrants are terrorists, Ukip's Scottish leader has claimed.

David Coburn, who is the party's sole elected official north of the border, made the claim in an interview with STV News' political editor Bernard Ponsonby.

In 2004, the EU set out in a directive that freedom of movement can be restricted by member states to individuals based "on grounds of public policy, public security or public health".

The MEP said he wants to "reduce massively the number of people coming in" to the country after the UK leaves the EU.

He told STV News: "The main thing we are trying to do is to reduce people coming en masse.

"With open door European migration means we cannot control if these people are terrorists or have had bad backgrounds."

Coburn, who is standing in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath in the election, said he is attracted to the Australian-style points-based immigration system.

"It is much better than the system we've got," he said.

When it was pointed out to him that Australia has a higher net immigration ratio than the UK, he said: "We can apply our own system. It is not the Australian system exactly that we are going to do. It is a British system"

He added: "The point is we want to be able to control how many people come into our country to stop the health system being obliterated."
