A law firm linked to an SNP candidate has entered administration with the loss of nine jobs.

Hamilton Burns WS declared insolvency on Tuesday with administrators citing a drop in legal aid income and "historic debt".

Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh had been involved with the firm for a decade from 2005 to 2015 until she entered parliament as the MP for Ochil and South Perthshire.

Ahmed-Sheikh also served as a director with the firm for a ten-month period until her election.

Administrator Tom MacLennan, of FRP Advisory, said the company had faced a "marked reduction in legal aid income" and "very high levels of historic debt".

Mr MacLennan added: "Every effort had been made to find a solution for the firm, however it became clear that administration was the only option.

"We are pleased to have negotiated agreements for the transfer of seven staff, client files and work in progress. It is with great regret that the remaining nine staff have been made redundant, for whom we will provide as much support as possible."

Seven other roles at the Glasgow-based firm have been transferred to Latta Law and Moss & Kelly Solicitors.

In the 2015/2016 financial year Hamilton Burns netted £526,000 in legal aid payments, according to Scottish Legal Aid Board figures.

Her time at the firm is also at the centre of a separate probe by the Law Society of Scotland, although this has not been linked to the business appointing insolvency practitioners.

A spokesman for FRP Advisory said: "Reviewing the trading history and transactions of a business is a standard procedure for any insolvency appointment."

According to Westminster's financial register of interests, Ahmed-Sheikh has maintained a nominal shareholding in Hamilton Burns WS.

An SNP spokesman said: "We are sorry to hear that the firm has gone into administration. Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh has not been a director of the company for over two years."

Ahmed-Sheikh is standing for re-election at the general election on June 8.
