The UK is heading for a hung parliament with the Conservatives set to be the largest party, according to the nationwide exit poll.

Theresa May's party is on course to lose 17 seats while Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party is set to gain 34 seats.

In Scotland, the survey indicates the SNP are to lose 22 seats but the pro-independence will still have a majority of seats.

To have a majority in the House of Commons a party must have 326 MPs.

A senior Scottish Labour source said the party is "very skeptical" about the survey but if it is accurate north of the border then it is catastrophic for Nicola Sturgeon"

Ipsos MORI's director in Scotland, Mark Diffely, said: "If Tories fall over the line with 330 or so, it is an absolutely unmitigated disaster.

"The two big winners of the night could be Corbyn and Ruth Davidson.'

The survey was conducted across the UK and asked 30,450 voters who they backed at the ballot box.
