SNP deputy leader Angus Robertson has lost his seat in Moray to the Conservatives.

Conservative candidate Douglas Ross triumphed in the constituency with more than 22,000 votes.

Robertson held the constituency since 2001 and has served as the Nationalists' leader in Westminster since 2015.

Ross is currently a regional MSP for the Conservatives in Holyrood.

The constituency returned the highest leave vote in Scotland in the referendum last year.

In his victory speech, Ross said: "I'd like to pay tribute to my fellow candidates. Could I also say to Angus, thank-you on behalf of the people of Moray for your outstanding service to the people of Moray over the last 16 years."

After losing his seat, Robertson said: "There's been a lot of developments going on in the UK general election.

"It seems to me there's a lot of change going on. People are seeking answers to the complex questions that we all face.

"I'm no longer going to be a member of parliament so I'm not going to play the same direct role. I'm confident the SNP is going to win the general election in Scotland and I wish my colleagues all the best."

Another big SNP scalp for the Tories was taking the Gordon seat from the nationalists' former leader Alex Salmond.
