Ukip's Scottish leader David Coburn has announced his intention to lead the party as a whole.

The outspoken MEP has thrown his hat in the ring to replace Paul Nuttall, who stood down following the general election.

The party saw its share of the vote collapse and it failed to win any seats in Westminster.

Coburn, who was elected as an MEP for Scotland in 2014, announced his candidacy for the party leadership on Twitter on Monday.

He said he would stand aside if Nigel Farage returns to lead the party.

Coburn said: "I am announcing my candidacy for UKIP Leader this time to stop Entryists Diletantes and Single issue loonies i have had enough (sic).

"Ukip drifted away from their core voters of late i intend to return to patriotic working people who need a party to support them."

He added: "I will withdraw but only if Nigel stands but no one else."
