A Glasgow Labour councillor was found dead in his home on Thursday morning.

Alistair Watson, who was aged 59, served in local government for many years.

During his career, the Cardonald councillor held the chairmanship of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and was recently appointed chief whip to the council's Labour group.

His death came just a day after former Glasgow Labour politician Gerald Leonard died in hospital aged 65.

Friends and colleagues of Mr Watson paid tribute to him on social media.

Council leader Susan Aitken tweeted: "The whole council is devastated at the sudden death of our colleague Alistair Watson. Our hearts are with his family & loved ones.

"Alistair was part of this place for over 20 years. It's hard to overstate the part he has played here and in the life of the city he loved."

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale tweeted: "Very sad week for the Labour family losing not one but two giants of Glasgow Labour in Alistair Watson and Gerry Leonard."

Glasgow Labour leader and former council boss Frank McAveety said: "The city has lost a major political figure. He was a shrewd politician and a champion for the people of Cardonald.

"On a personal level, I have lost a loyal friend. The Labour Party and family has lost a crusader who was always fizzing with ideas.

"A doer, who got things done to improve the lives of the people across this city, especially the people in his ward."
