The First Minister is "out of touch" with the country, the Scottish secretary has claimed.

David Mundell told delegates at the UK Conservative conference in Manchester that the general election result in June showed the public is not behind the SNP's call for a second independence referendum.

The SNP lost 21 seats at the election, with 12 of them going to Mundell's party.

Nicola Sturgeon conceded after the election that her call for a new referendum was "undoubtedly" a factor in the party's loss of support.

The Scottish secretary said the result means any independence vote has been put "on hold" but the only way it can be permanently parked is for Ruth Davidson to be elected as First Minister.

He told conference delegates: "The election showed just how badly out of touch Nicola Sturgeon is with public opinion."

Mundell added: "Nicola Sturgeon subjected Scotland to a year of political game-playing as she sought to turn the EU referendum into an excuse for a second independence poll.

"I'm glad the election result finally forced her to put her constitutional campaign on hold."

The Scottish secretary also used his speech to call for more cooperation between the Scottish and UK governments.

"For the good of the country we both govern - enough of the point scoring," he said.

"We have to work together, Scotland's two governments, on getting Scotland Brexit-ready."
