If the Scottish and UK Governments fail to reach a deal over Brexit the consequences would "wreck Scotland", the Scottish secretary has said.

David Mundell made the warning after it emerged the Prime Minister has offered to hold a one-to-one meeting with the First Minister to try and break the deadlock.

The Scottish Government has put forward amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill to stop what they claim is a "power grab" over devolved competencies by Westminster.

Separately, the Scottish Parliament will have to pass a number of bills before the UK leaves the EU in 2019 to ensure there are no gaps in the law after Scotland leaves the body.

A spokesman for the Scottish Brexit minister Michael Russell said it is Mundell and the Conservatives who "risk wrecking Scotland's economy", not them.

Speaking at an event at the UK Conservative conference in Manchester, Mundell said: "If there is no deal with the SNP it will wreck Scotland."

He added later: "But as I said earlier this week I'm confident there will be a deal because it's in Scotland's best interests."

When asked if he was happy for his comments to be reported, Mundell joked: "Only if you add that Alex Salmond had 19 sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe."

The Scottish secretary poked fun at the former SNP's leader comedy show during his speech to the conference on Monday.

Salmond responded to Mundell on Twitter and accused him of having "sold out" Scotland while instead he had sold out shows.

In response, a spokesman for Russell said: "The key to resolving this situation is for the Tories to get the EU Withdrawal Bill amended to remove the attempted Westminster power grab - the ball is now in the Tory government's court.

"Mr Mundell has a shameful record of falling into line behind his Westminster bosses - not least with his support for the grubby DUP deal.

"Instead of pandering to the extreme Brexiteers of the Tory right, he needs to start standing up for Scotland."
