The Scottish Conservative conference in Aberdeen has been cancelled after warnings of more severe wintry weather.

The event was due to begin tomorrow lunchtime at the city's AECC venue, with the Prime Minister set to open the final day of proceedings with a speech on Saturday.

An Amber weather warning has been extended to cover Friday morning with the Met Office forecasting "a further 5-10 cm of snow is expected quite widely" and "strong winds will continue to lead to drifting of snow, and severe wind chill, while lightning could be an additional hazard, particularly near coasts."

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson tweeted: "Delegates safety comes first, so reluctantly @ScotTories conference is now cancelled due to Amber warning being extended into tomorrow.

"My thanks to Police Scotland, the SG Resilience Unit and Scot Gov ministers who have kept us informed of changing weather and travel situation."

The decision comes after widespread transport disruption throughout Scotland, with hundreds of commuters stuck overnight in freezing temperatures on the M80.
