Mike Russell MSP has said it has become clearer every day since the vote to leave the European Union that "Westminster does not speak for Scotland".

The Scottish Government's Brexit Minister made the claims on the second anniversary of the ballot.

On June 23, 2016 voters north of the border chose to remain in the EU, 62% compared with 38%, while 52% of the UK decided to leave.

Mr Russell said: "The Tories are undermining devolution, which the people of Scotland overwhelmingly voted for, in order to force through Brexit, which Scotland roundly rejected.

"Time has almost run out. The UK Government has completely failed to come up with proposals of its own and must now at this week's EU Council put on the table the Scottish Government's plan to stay inside the Single Market and Customs Union.

"That will bring an end to the chaos and give people some certainty.

"However, what has become clearer with every day that has passed since the Brexit vote is that Westminster does not speak for Scotland and is utterly incapable of representing our national interests."

His comments comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday trust in Westminster has been eroded by the Brexit negotiations.

MPs approved parts of the EU Withdrawal Bill related to devolution after less than 20 minutes of debate last week, despite the Scottish Parliament voting against granting formal consent.

Ms Sturgeon wants protections written into law that would effectively give the Scottish Government a veto of some of the laws pulling the UK out of the bloc.

A UK Government spokeswoman said: "The UK voted to leave the EU and the UK Government is delivering the result of the referendum.

"We urge the Scottish Government to work with us as we get the best deal for Scotland and the rest of the UK as we leave the EU."
