Boris Johnson has resigned as foreign secretary, Downing Street has confirmed.

It follows the resignation of Brexit secretary David Davis on Sunday night.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary.

"The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work."

Davis stepped down on Sunday night over the UK Government's Brexit plans, leaving the Prime Minister facing a possible leadership challenge.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said Theresa May has "no authority left" and called for a general election.

On Monday night, Downing Street announced that health secretary Jeremy Hunt has replaced Boris Johnson as foreign secretary.

The announcement said: "The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt as secretary of state for foreign and Commonwealth affairs."

Dominic Raab has also been appointed to the Brexit brief, while Matt Hancock was made health secretary to replace Hunt.

This is not a Government in meltdown... yet.

It is however a Prime Minister in a bunker battling to save her reputation and above all her new Brexit policy.

Boris Johnson described the Chequers policy as an 'attempt to polish a turd'. He has put his Mr Sheen away and held his nose whilst undermining his leader.

The Prime Minister has three objectives; save the new Brexit policy, save her own skin and unite Parliament behind her Brexit vision. Those objectives amount to mission impossible.

The only question: which one - or ones - will bite the dust?
