A Fife councillor who suggested the Israeli secret service may have been behind the front pages of three Jewish newspapers has been suspended by Labour.

It comes after the Jewish Chronicle, Jewish News and Jewish Telegraph all printed the same "United We Stand" covers in protest against Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

In a Facebook post, Mary Lockhart speculated that it may have been a "Mossad-assisted campaign" intended to "prevent the election of a labour government".

Ms Lockhart has been suspended by the Labour Party while it investigates her comments.

A spokesman for the party said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints of anti-Semitism extremely seriously and we are committed to challenging and campaigning against it in all its forms.

"All complaints about anti-Semitism are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken."

Following the publication of the three newspapers, Ms Lockhart posted on Facebook: "If the purpose is to generate opposition to anti-Semitism, it has backfired spectacularly.

"If it is to get rid of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader, it is unlikely to succeed, and it is a shameless piece of cynical opportunism.

"And if it is a Mossad-assisted campaign to prevent the election of a Labour government pledged to recognise Palestine as a state, it is unacceptable interference in the democracy of Britain."

She later deleted the post and said she would "not be commenting further" until Labour had concluded its investigation.
