The First Minister is demanding to know what the Prime Minister's Plan B is on Brexit if she cannot secure a deal with the European Union.

Both leaders are holding talks on the issue at Edinburgh University.

Theresa May was in the Scottish capital to signed a £1.2bn City Deal aimed at boosting economic growth in and around Edinburgh.

Ahead of the deal being signed, Nicola Sturgeon has said the Prime Minister's Chequers plan is "dead" and will not be accepted by the EU.

However, Mrs May is expected to tell the First Minister it can form the basis of a future trading relationship.

The First Minister said: "Everybody seems to think the Chequers plan is pretty much dead apart from the Prime Minister herself.

"The EU has been pretty consistent, but perhaps more fundamentally for the Prime Minister her own party wont even unite behind it.

"So my question to the Prime Minister will be 'what is your plan B?'"

Mrs May had earlier said that Brexit could lead to a "brighter future for the whole UK".

The City Deal for Edinburgh and the south east of Scotland includes funding for a new concert venue, research centres and improvements to the city bypass.

The outline of the deal, which aims to create 21,000 new jobs over several years, was agreed in 2017.

The Prime Minister said: "As we leave the EU, the UK Government is working in partnership with business, academia and the devolved administrations to create more good jobs and spread economic prosperity across the country.

"By making the most of our country's assets and the talents of all of our people, we can build a brighter future for the whole UK."
