Scotland Tonight: Lord David Steel on the independence debate
The former Liberal leader said the standard of debate was disappointing.
Lord David Steel has launched a scathing attack on the debate about Scottish independence, claiming it has been blighted by scaremongering and empty claims.
In an interview with Scotland Tonight, the former Liberal leader said claims such as David Cameron’s assertion that an independent Scotland would be more vulnerable to terrorist attacks, or Nicola Sturgeon’s suggestion that fuel bills would come down, obscured the real issues in the campaign.
He said: “None of these claims stand up and I think we need a grown-up debate about do we really want to be a separate nation or not.”
He added that the No campaign needed to focus on Scotland’s future in the United Kingdom and not be drawn into negativity.
And he called for the House of Lords to be reformed as part of a wider constitutional overhaul, turning it into an indirectly elected chamber with 40 elected Scottish peers.
