Care provider to close 12 nursing homes across Scotland
More than 160 residents could be forced to find somewhere new to live.
A care provider has announced plans to close 12 nursing homes across Scotland.
Trade union Unison said the decision by Bield Housing would result in more than 160 residents, including some aged 90 and above, being forced to leave their homes.
Unison demanded action after the not-for-profit organisation announced it would withdraw from the care home sector over the next 12 to 18 months.
Brian Logan, chief executive of Bield, said: "We have made the very difficult decision to withdraw from the residential care home market by July 2018.
"This decision affects all our 12 care homes in Scotland. In a small number of cases discussions are continuing with alternative providers which would mean the services could continue."
The company said it was aware of the "serious impact" the move would have on residents, their families and those working in the homes.
John Gallacher, Unison's Scottish organiser, demanded First Minister Nicola Sturgeon "intervene and ask how Bield Housing's management team got themselves into this position".
The union leader said: "This is a disaster for families across Scotland and it questions the role of government, integrated joint boards, NHS and local authorities.
"The task of making alternative arrangements will fall back on public authorities, the tax payer and individual families at a few months notice.
"This is at a time when demand for care services can only increase. As a charity, using public funds, Bield Housing must be held accountable."
A Scottish Government spokesman said: "We understand that this must be an unsettling time for all residents, families and employees affected by Bield's decision.
"Since being alerted to Bield's intention to redesign its service model, we have been engaging with the Care Inspectorate and Chief Officers of Integration Authorities to ensure that plans are put in place to ensure that residents' care needs are a priority and that they will continue to be met in an appropriate setting.
"We will continue to engage with authorities about these plans."
