Ice warning for Scotland's roads as cold snap is set to continue

Motorists have been advised to exercise extreme caution and adapt their driving to the conditions.

Ice warnings are in place across Scotland as temperatures remain sub zero.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning of ice on Friday as temperatures on wet roads continued to fall below zero.

Forecasters also said further sleet or snow was likely in places, mainly above around 200 metres elevation.

The risk of snow is expected to move away through Friday with ice as the primary concern.

In Edinburgh Lothian and Borders Police warned of difficult conditions on the city bypass as well as slippery road conditions in the Bruntsfield and Morningside areas.

Tayside Police warned of hazardous conditions on the A93 between Blairgowrie and Perth and in the Crieff and Comrie areas.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary warned drivers of icy conditions on all of the region's roads.

In the Grampian area the B974 Banchory to Fettercairn road remained closed and there were reports of snow drifting on the A939 Corgarff to Tomintoul road and the A93 at Glenshee.

There were also problems on the A96 between Kintore and Blackburn after a two-vehicle crash at 5.30am on Friday. No one was injured but the outside lane was closed causing long tailbacks.

Grampian Police warned drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to expect treacherous conditions.

A spokesman for the force said: "There have been cold, freeezing temperatures overnight and many roads may not have been treated with a risk of ice forming.

"Roads may look black but there still may be ice forming and drivers should remain aware and drive according to the conditions.

"Motorists should drive at a speed which allows them time to react."

Meanwhile all of Scotland's ski centres were expected to open for the weekend.

CairnGorm Mountain and the Lecht opened last weekend as the first widespread snow of winter fell in Scotland and Glencoe Mountain opened earlier this week.

It is anticipated that Nevis Range and Glenshee will have some runs open at the weekend.

It has been one of the earliest starts to the snowsports season and after a disappointing season last year the centres are hoping that it will signal the start of a good season.

STV weatherman Sean Batty said much of the country woke up to ice on Friday after road surface temperatures dropped.

He said: "The lowest temperature overnight was in Kinbrace, in Sutherland, where it fell to -7C which is not as cold as Wednesday night which had a low of -13C in Braemar in Aberdeenshire. Temperatures have generally been the lowest in the north and north-east and higher in the west. The surface temperatures of the roads are a few degrees below the air temperature which has caused the ice to form."

Respite however is on the way with temperatures expected to be milder over the weekend before dropping again into next week.

"It will start to turn cold Sunday night and into next week. There is a risk of snow showers again particularly across the north and north east," he added.
