Firefighters tackle blaze at Hydro concert venue on the River Clyde
The venue, which is scheduled to open in September, began billowing smoke on Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters have battled a blaze at an under-construction concert venue in Glasgow.
Four appliances and 40 firefighters were on the scene at the Hydro on the River Clyde.
The £125m venue, which is scheduled to open in September, began billowing smoke on Saturday afternoon. Streams of flames were seen tumbling from the roof and edifice of the building and huge plumes of black smoke engulfed nearby buildings.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had received a report of a blaze at 3.20pm.
Four fire engines were dispatched to the location to bring the flames under control. The fire was extinguished early on Saturday evening.
A statement from the service read: "Firefighters upon their arrival were met with a developing fire within the roof space of the building which is currently under construction and in recognising the complexity of the structure in relation to where the fire was located the incident commander immediately requested additional special 'High Reach' appliances to attack the fire."
Group Commander John Rae said: "The initial firefighting actions and tactical decision making from the first attending crews prevented the fire from spreading far more rapidly than it did and thus limited the damage caused.
"Fires within the roof space of any building give major problems to firefighters, especially in terms of access and this was a new building under construction with an unusual design".
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way by the services' incident research and investigation section in conjunction with Police Scotland.
The Hydro is situated next to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) and the Clyde Auditorium on the River Clyde.
When it opens in the autumn, the Hydro will host music concerts as well as sports events and other shows. The Hydro is also scheduled to host some Commonwealth Games events next year.
It was recently announced that Rod Stewart will play the opening concert at the 12,000-seat venue on September 30.
Forty firefighters battled the blaze with special 'High Reach' ladders.
