The Scottish Government has come under renewed pressure to suspend the use of a controversial medical implant.

Women affected by mesh implant surgery have taken to the courts in countries like America and Australia.

In Scotland lawyers with hundreds of clients, who say they have been left disabled and in chronic pain as a result of the procedure to treat stress incontinence and prolapsed bladders, are now preparing test cases.

The issue was raised at Holyrood on Tuesday, with calls for the Scottish Government to suspend the use of the implants.

Neil Findlay, Labour MSP for Lothian, asked why the government had not taken the decision to suspend the products in light of the re-classification in the USA.

However, public health minister Michael Matheson, said there were no plans to change guidance on the use of mesh implants until European research was concluded.

He said: "Our sympathies are with any woman who has had complications as a result of treatment that has been received through the use of this particular type of medical product.

"You will understand that these products are regulated by the medicines and healthcare regulatory agency by the European Commission and we have to be led by their guidance on this matter.

"And like other regulatory bodies across the world the MHRA in the UK are not recommending that it should not be used at this present time.

"However, we have asked for an urgent meeting with them to ask them about what specific action they now intend to take as a result of the FDA's actions in the US.

"And equally we have also asked for the European Commission to be very clear about the two pieces of research that they are undertaking as well to make sure once the findings of those research are carried out and that action is taken quickly.

"If that leads to the need of a re-classification of these products then we will act on that. We have to work within the regulatory function that we have at the present time.

"But the member can be reassured that if there is any change to the guidance and recommendations that is made to the HRA or the European Commision, that this government will act swiftly on this matter."
