Homes at Pitscottie near Cupar in Fife were affected by flood water.

Flooding in Methill, Fife.

Residents at Pitscottie in Fife have been evacuated from their homes after heavy rain hit much of Scotland.

The Red Cross were called in to help residents at the village near Cupar as homes were flooded. Homes at Dura Den Road were badly affected and had partially collapsed in the deluge.

Around 12 homes in the village had to be evacuated.

Ceres, another village near Cupar, was also badly flooded with roads through the village closed due to flood water.

The village green was submerged in water and the burn had burst its banks. Residents also reported that water had flooded homes.

North-east Fife has been particularly badly affected with many roads closed and some drivers having to be rescued from their vehicles.

In one incident late on Thursday night, fire crews rescued a woman and her dog from her car after it became stuck in 3ft of floodwater near Colinsburgh on the east coast. Occupants also had to be rescued from a car which was submerged in flood water close to Shell Bay caravan park in Elie.

The A92 was closed between Dundee and Arbroath due to flooding on Friday morning.

Road closures in Fife included the A955 between Kirkcaldy and East Wemyss, the A915 at Cairnsmill and at Largoward, the A917 between Elie to Balcrystie and the B942 between Balcrystie and Colinsburgh.

And in Monifieth by Dundee Tayside Fire and Rescue were assisting residents at North Balmossie Street to pump out flood water. The service were also called out to addresses in Montrose, Glamis and Brechin.

Buses in Fife were also affected by the weather with cancellations and heavy delays between St Andrews and Leven in Fife and St Andrews and Dundee.

Forecasters predicted almost half of October’s average rain to would fall on Thursday night and throughout Friday.

STV weather forecaster Jo Farrow predicted that they weather would stay wet into the weekend.

She said: "After torrential downpours to start Friday in Tayside the band of very heavy rain is clearing away northwards through Angus. This will leave a cloudy damp day across Tayside and a similar picture for the weekend."

A spokesman for Tayside police said: "The heavy overnight rain has resulted in challenging driving conditions and drivers are asked to recognise that a number of roads across the region, rural roads in particular are badly affected by surface and standing water.

"From Angus, there have been at least three reports of cars getting into difficulty as a result of drivers attempting to plough through deep water, causing engines to fail.

"There is currently a road closure eastbound on the A92 Dundee to Arbroath road, in the Ethiebeaton area, due to flooding and drivers are encouraged to use an alternative route if possible.

"Localised flooding is being experienced in many parts of Angus in particular, including areas around Brechin, Wellbank, Emmock, Kellas, Gagie and Tealing as the rain stubbornly remains over the area.

"Local authorities and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency are closely monitoring river levels with warning currently in place for the Isla at Alyth, the Esk at Bridge of Dun and the Lyon at Bridge of Balgie, as well as various points along the Earn."
