Police confirm golden eagle found dead on grouse moor was poisoned

The bird of prey was discovered in the hills above Glen Lethnot in Angus earlier this month

Golden opportunity: Plans launched to protect eagles

Police are investigating the death of a golden eagle which was found dead on a grouse moor after tests revealed it had been poisoned.

The two-year-old bird, named Fearnan, was discovered earlier this month in the hills above Glen Lethnot in Angus.

Roy Dennis, of the Foundation for Wildlife, had been monitoring the eagle's movements and contacted police after its satellite tracking signal stopped moving for several days.

Police Scotland and RSPB Scotland investigations staff found the dead bird during a search of the moor and took it for laboratory tests, whics confirmed the bird had been poisoned.

The charity said the eagle was ringed as a chick in a nest near Loch Tay in Perthshire in June 2011 and had spent much of its life in Badenoch. It moved to the Angus glens in early November but was poisoned just weeks later.

Police are asking anyone who was in Glen Lethnot and the surrounding areas between November 10 and 25 to contact them.

Constable Blair Wilkie, wildlife liaison officer for Angus, said: "Given the rural location of this crime, we appeal to anyone who was out walking, working, or indeed out on the hills for whatever purpose between those dates, to get in touch.”

He added: "It's also important to stress to the public that in cases where poisoned baits are used to target birds of prey, the poisons present a wider threat. They are, without question, a significant health risk to both humans and animals.”

RSPB Scotland director Stuart Housden said: "This appalling incident involving a species recently voted as the nation's favourite bird marks a dreadful end to the Year of Natural Scotland.

"Incidents such as this show very clearly why this iconic bird needs not just our recognition, but also greater protection.”

The killing was also condemned by Douglas McAdam, chief executive of Scottish Land and Estates.

He said: “We are appalled that poisoning is the cause of the death of a golden eagle in Angus earlier this month and we offer our support to Police Scotland as they continue to gather evidence about this incident.

“We will be contacting our own members and encouraging them to respond to the police call for information.”
