Firefighters battling garage blaze forced to flee collapsing building
Thirty-five firefighters tackled the blaze at MobiTyre in Kilmarnock on Tuesday.
Firefighters battling a blaze at a car garage were forced to flee when the building began to collapse.
Emergency services were alerted after the fire broke out in units at the rear of MobiTyre in Kilmarnock shortly after 1am on Tuesday.
Firefighters wearing breathing gear entered the Grange Street building - but had to retreat after the walls started to cave in.
The fire service spent nearly 15 hours fighting the fire before it was brought under control at 4pm.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “There was a fire just after 1am on Tuesday on Grange Street in Kilmarnock.
“Firefighters were met with a well-developed fire and the three fire engines which attended called for more assistance. Thirty-five firefighters attended in total and some were called out of the building after the structure started to collapse.
“The fire spread laterally and around 75% of the roof collapsed. There was also a partial collapse of the external walls.”
Nobody is thought to have been injured in the fire but the MobiTyre garage has been left badly smoke-damaged.
