St Mirren to rename stadium as part of Paisley City of Culture bid
Proposal would see St Mirren Park rebranded as the Paisley 2021 Stadium ahead of announcement in 2017.
St Mirren Football Club is to rename their stadium as part of the bid for Paisley to be named the UK City of Culture in 2021.
The proposed £30,000-a-year sponsorship deal would see St Mirren Park rebranded as the Paisley 2021 Stadium ahead of the announcement of the winning culture bid in 2017.
Councillors will vote on the rebrand on Wednesday with the sponsorship including advertising and branding inside the stadium and online.
On Friday Renfrewshire Council unveiled the £56m plan to be named City of Culture, a title currently held by Derry-Londonderry.
St Mirren chief executive Brian Caldwell said: "St Mirren FC is proud of its roots in Paisley’s history, dating back to the founding of the club in the town in 1877.
"These proposals would see our stadium playing a key part of the City of Culture campaign and I am certain that our fans will get right behind it.
"The club already has many strong links with the local community. A successful bid to become UK City of Culture will bring many benefits to the town and local people, so we are really excited about lending our support to the Paisley campaign."
Renfrewshire Council leaders believe the regeneration of the culture sector could help support 250 new jobs and bring £89m to the local economy.
Paisley's bid to succeed Hull as City of Culture was officially launched in a two-day event over Friday and Saturday.
The winner of the 2021 bid will take over from Hull who were named the 2017 City of Culture in 2013.
Dundee had bid for the 2017 title and were down to the final four contenders along with Swansea Bay and Leicester.
Paisley could be up against Perth for the 2021 title with councillors there to approve funding before the deadline for final applications in April 2017.
Councillor Mark Macmillan, leader of Renfrewshire Council, added: "We are delighted to have the support of Paisley’s football club, St Mirren FC, for our bid to bring the UK City of Culture title to the town in 2021.
"The club is part of the bedrock of Paisley’s history and an essential part of the cultural life of the town and its people.
"We launched our campaign and our new UK City of Culture bid branding at a huge open-air party in the centre of Paisley and we had a great response from local people who turned out to support it.
"The support of our local club would be a huge boost for our campaign to encourage people in Paisley, Renfrewshire and beyond to get behind our bid which will mean so much for the town."
