While Tunnock's earned universal praise and profit from the use of the tea cakes in the Glasgow 2014 opening ceremony, the company's latest announcement has divided the nation.

Despite many brushing off the notion of Tunnock's rebranding themselves as home of "the great British tea cake" south of the border, many others are up in arms at the new marketing campaign.

The posters and advertising use a spin on the popular BBC One programme The Great British Bake Off and comments from Boyd Tunnock in the Mail on Sunday suggest the use of "Scottish" on the label would only promote Scotland.

Mr Tunnock also made no secret of the fact he voted no in the 2014 independence referendum which has caused many social media users to make their love/hatred of the confectionery snack known to the world.

Ryan Alexander Dewar: "Boycotting should, however nationalist I am, reserve itself to an individual, and judging them for their inaction to buy certain companies product is entirely reasonable if they think so. It's hardly Nestle child labour but the point is driven home."

Christine Schofield: "For sure, I've already stopped eating my favourite biscuit. They should move south of the border, if they feel so strongly about being British and not Scottish. Mmmm it was the Scots that made them their money."

Andy Ross: "A lot of folk say "it's only a wrapper". The Nazis said the Swastika was "only a flag". Symbolism is everything, and if Tunnock's think they can increase their profits by ditching their Scottish heritage, good luck to them."
