A car has been deliberately set ablaze in a late-night fire attack on a main street.

The silver Audi A3 was set on fire outside a property in the early hours of Monday in the Lanarkshire town of Salsburgh.

Fire crews and police were called to the scene on Salsburgh Main Street at 3.35am on Monday and found the car up in flames.

Police have launched an investigation into the deliberate fire-raising and branded it "an incredibly dangerous act" which caused thousands of pounds in damage to the car.

Detective sergeant Tom Kiernan, from Wishaw CID, said: "There is no doubt that this fire was started deliberately and we are yet to establish a motive for the attack.

"This was an incredibly dangerous act that caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the vehicle. The fire could easily have spread to other parked cars and put members of the public in even greater danger."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on non-emergency number 101.
