Scotland's worst-offending areas for drink-drivers have been revealed in new statistics.

DVLA figures reveal more than 20,000 drivers have been banned from the roads for drink-driving or alcohol-related driving offences.

The statistics, obtained by The Herald under freedom of information legislation, show Airdrie in North Lanarkshire, with the postcode ML6, is home to the highest number of banned drink-drivers over the last five years with a total of 304.

Livingston (EH54) was next in the table with a total of of 249 drivers banned for alcohol-related offences over the same period.

Motherwell, Carfin, Holytown, Cleland, New Stevenston and Newarthill, all Lanarkshire, were also ranked in the top ten.

A total of 21,573 motorists in Scotland have been banned since 2011, an average of almost 12 a day.

However, the number of drivers banned for the minimum term of 12 months for drink-driving fell between 2011 and 2015 from 4904 to 3597.

Blantyre and Cambuslang (G72) were ranked seventh in the top ten with 230 disqualifications.

A spokesman for road safety charity Brake said: "It is proven that drivers with 20-50mg of alcohol in their blood are three times more likely to die in a crash than those who have drunk none.

"That's why Brake will continue to call on the police to pursue these criminal drivers, and for the courts to hand out severe sentences."
