The Wickerman Festival in Dumfries and Galloway will not be held this year, organisers have announced.

The popular music festival is usually held in late July near Dundrennan where the classic 1973 film The Wicker Man was made, the inspiration for the festival's name.

The event is brought to a close with the burning of a giant straw statue inspired by the cult film.

The festival went ahead last year, six months after the death of co-founder Jamie Gilroy. The festival had been held at his farm for 14 years.

Organisers say it will return in 2017 and people who bought early tickets for this summer will be refunded.

Festival director Jennie Camm said: "Following the hugely successful running of The Wickerman Festival in 2015, which followed shortly after the death of the event's co-founder Jamie Gilroy, the Wickerman Festival organisers have decided to take a year off in 2016.

"The event will go ahead in 2017 and plans are already taking shape. The organisers are grateful for the kind messages and loyal support from all Wicker fans and look forward to announcing further details about the 2017 festival shortly.

"Meanwhile people who have purchased early bird tickets for 2016 will be refunded automatically by Skiddle. The Wickerman Festival website, and social media, will be regularly updated to outline plans for 2017."

The Waterboys, Example and Tom Odell headlined the event last year. Dizzee Rascal, Jimmy Cliff and Lulu have also played the event in recent years.
