Schools in Glasgow and Edinburgh have been searched by police after they received hoax bomb threats over the phone.

The High School of Glasgow and Hillhead High in Glasgow and Royal High, Tynecastle High and Boroughmuir High in Edinburgh received the calls on Monday morning.

The threats were made through automated voice calls to the schools. Staff and police officers searched the premises and nothing suspicious was found.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed the incidents are being treated as malicious hoax calls.

Pupils in the Glasgow schools remained inside, while two of the Edinburgh schools were evacuated during the searches.

The police spokeswoman said of the Edinburgh cases: “Two schools in Edinburgh were evacuated at around 10.30am on Monday following threats being made to three schools via telephone.

“Officers attended and searched all three premises, and nothing untoward was found. The schools are now operating as normal and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this.”

Pupils from Tynecastle were taken to nearby football stadium and Royal High was also evacuated, but children remained inside Boroughmuir High.

A spokesman for Edinburgh City Council said: "Three high schools in Edinburgh received telephone threats this morning.

"All the school buildings have been searched and nothing found. Staff and pupils are now back in the schools operating as normal and Police Scotland are continuing with their inquiries.”
