A woman who slipped and fell up to 500ft down a mountain has been airlifted to safety.

The woman was walking up Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran on Monday when she stumbled just below the summit.

Members of the Arran Mountain Rescue Team went to her aid with the help of the coastguard.

The woman, who fell between 300ft and 500ft, was taken to University Hospital Crosshouse near Kilmarnock but the extent of her injuries is unclear.

A spokesman for Arran MRT said: “The team were called out this afternoon to a female who had slipped and fallen, sustaining various injuries just below the summit of Goat Fell.

“Due to her injuries Rescue 999 winched the casualty off the hill and the rest of her party were walked down off Goat fell by team members.

“Our hills are still very much in winter conditions at the moment and we advise anyone venturing to them to have an axe and crampons and adequate winter gear.”
