A woman spotted in the River Clyde is "firmly believed" to be missing teenager Sarah Goldie, police say.

The force said no one else is believed to have been involved in the incident in Glasgow, which led to the 18-year-old entering the water.

Officers are continuing to search the river close to the Broomielaw, near the King George V Bridge, where the teenager was last seen.

Ms Goldie was reported missing from her home in Renfrew at about 11.40pm on Friday after leaving earlier in the day to go to Glasgow.

That evening, emergency services responded to reports of a woman in the water near the bridge. Two men had jumped into the river to help her but the woman was not traced. Police said Ms Goldie's handbag was found near the area of the incident.

Chief inspector Mark Sutherland said: "Our inquiry to trace Sarah Goldie continues and I would like to thank the public who have responded so positively to our appeals for information, which has allowed us to speak to a number of significant witnesses.

"We have been piecing together Sarah's movements on Friday in both Renfrew and Glasgow through CCTV evidence and witness accounts.

"We have spoken to a number of people who witnessed an incident close to the King George V Bridge in Glasgow later that evening and now firmly believe that the young woman who was seen in the water is Sarah Goldie from the Renfrew area."

"We have continued to keep Sarah's family updated throughout our inquiry. No one else is believed to have been involved in the incident that led to Sarah entering the water.

"Our specialist marine policing unit and divisional officers are continuing to search the River Clyde today."

Ms Goldie's father Gordon said earlier this week that he had been "completely overwhelmed" by the support his family has received.
