The owner of a historic family-run woollen mill has confirmed all 86 jobs at its North Ayrshire plant are at risk.

Robert Hinchliff, co-owner of Z Hinchliff and Sons, said due to "two mild winters" demand has dropped for the wool products it makes.

Mr Hinchliff, whose ancestor founded the business in 1766, said he is trying to find a buyer for the factory in Dalry, where it has been trading for 50 years.

He said: "Due to lack of demand with regards to two mild winters we've just experienced, there's just less demand for the end product that comes from our materials.

"We have more capability in Dalry than we have orders for and unfortunately we have to address this situation.

"We put our people in Dalry on notice that we are on a 30-day consultation and that ends on Friday. We are trying to find a buyer to save the factory and as many jobs as possible.

"It would be inappropriate to talk about prospective buyers at this stage."

The firm's other four UK factories are unaffected.

The company produces luxury yarns such as Cashmere , Angora, camel hair and lambs wool.
