The family of a missing father-of-five have been contacted by police about remains discovered near a park.

John Murphy, 53, disappeared from his home in Dennistoun, Glasgow, in May last year.

Police sealed off an area near Mugdock Country Park in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, on Tuesday after a member of the public found human remains.

Mr Murphy's relatives have been informed of the find. It is understood the families of other missing people have also been contacted.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "We can now confirm that the remains are of a human nature. The process of identifying the remains continues.

"A post mortem will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death, however, the death is not being treated as suspicious by officers at this time. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

A message was written on a Facebook page set up to help find Mr Murphy which read: "I want to thank you all for your kind messages, as you can imagine this is a difficult time.

"At this moment we do not have any definitive answers, these things can take a while and when we have some news I will let you know."

Married Mr Murphy left his home in Craigpark Drive at around 7am on May 12 and headed towards Duke Street to catch a bus to work.

He did not turn up at his workplace and was reported missing by his family that evening.

Mr Murphy is around 5ft 8in and of medium build, with short brown hair which is turning grey.
