A man extradited from Australia has been charged with committing murder almost 17 years ago.

James McGowan is accused over the death of 45-year-old Owen Brannigan, who was allegedly stabbed to death at a house in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, in November 1999.

McGowan, 57, was arrested by police in Australia last year and was extradited before appearing at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Monday. He faces a charge of murder and assault to severe injury.

McGowan made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody. He will appear in court again next Tuesday.
