A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked outside flats.

The 47-year-old was seriously injured in the assault near to the Bank of Scotland on Main St, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, around 8.15pm on Tuesday.

He was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital where he is presently detained. Medical staff describe his condition as critical.

Detective inspector Kevin Jamieson, from Wishaw CID, said: "From our enquiries so far we know that there were a number of people walking by the close, one or two of whom looked in, around about the time of the assault.

"I would ask they, or indeed anyone with knowledge about the incident, contact police as their information could prove vital to our investigation."
