Hundreds of mourners are expected to attend a memorial event for schoolgirl Paige Doherty.

Paige, 15, from Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, disappeared on Saturday morning after leaving a friend's house and failing to turn up for her part-time job at a hairdressers.

The teenager was reported missing and a major search launched before her body was then found two days later, on Monday in a wooded area near Goals Sports Complex just off Great Western Road in the town.

Officers arrested local delicatessen owner John Leathem, 31, in connection with Paige's death.

On Saturday, hundreds of people are expected to turn out at Whitecrook Park in Clydebank to pay their respects to the 15-year-old.

Police said the event would be a "fitting tribute to Paige" but warned against people letting off Chinese lanterns due to the park being in the flight path of Glasgow Airport.

The event comes after the Titan Crane in Clydebank was lit up in pink on Thursday and Friday as a mark of respect to the teenager.

A statement from the force said: "Police Scotland is aware that there is a memorial event planned to pay tribute to Paige Doherty on Saturday March 26 in Whitecrook Park, Clydebank.

"This event has been publicised on social media and there has been a suggestion that chinese lanterns will be launched during it.

"Whilst the memorial is a fitting tribute to Paige, we would urge anyone attending this event to refrain from using chinese lanterns.

"Whitecrook Park is directly below the flightpath for Glasgow Airport and any such activity could seriously endanger aircraft on their final approach to land.

"Endangering aircraft is a criminal offence and such conduct would detract from the genuine intention of this event.

"Community police officers at Clydebank will be making contact with the organisers of this event to ensure the safety of all attending and to offer assistance from the police if required.

"We would ask anyone considering organising any such event to contact us on 101 so we can provide appropriate advice and guidance."

Leathem is expected to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Saturday.
