A man has admitted shouting racist abuse at a demonstration over Syrian refugees being housed in Scotland.

Steven Kerr was arrested after clashes between pro- and anti-refugee groups in Monkton, South Ayrshire, in November.

The 31-year-old delivery driver was detained after police heard him shouting racist remarks during the demonstration.

Kerr, was arrested and charged with behaving in a threatening or abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm by shouting, swearing and making racial remarks.

He was due to go on trial at Ayr Sheriff Court this week but struck a deal with prosecutors which saw him plead guilty to an amended charge just minutes before his trial was due to start.

Kerr admitted shouting a single racist remark during the clashes.

Due to the serious nature of the charge, sheriff Carole Cunningham called for Kerr to be assessed by social workers ahead of sentencing in April.
