Police chiefs have issued a warning they will deal strongly with any hatred and extremism after the "religiously aggravated" killing of a shopkeeper.

Asad Shah, 40, was found with serious injuries outside his newsagents on Minard Road in Shawlands, Glasgow, on Thursday evening.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival after the incident, which happened around 9pm.

On Friday afternoon, police confirmed a 32-year-old man had been arrested in connection with Mr Shah's death, which police are treating as "religiously aggravated".

He is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Police Scotland assistant chief constable Ruaraidh Nicolson and commander Mark Chishty, of the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), issued a letter to the community reassuring locals and warning that any "sectarian conflict, hatred or extremism will be dealt with swiftly and strongly."

The letter also says additional police patrols have been arranged and officers are working closely with the community.

It states: "We know that this has shocked all of our communities and our main aim is now to ensure that justice is delivered for Mr Shah, his family and indeed the wider community.

"We are extremely grateful for the support received from all sections of the community and have charged a 32-year-old male.

"We must allow the course of justice to proceed and in this respect we are not able to discuss the case any further as this is a matter for the courts.

"What we are able to say, having engaged with many denominations within the Muslim communities, is that they all resolutely condemn any form of hatred, extremism and violence.

"We would like to reassure you that we will be working very closely with all communities and any sectarian conflict, hatred or extremism will be dealt with swiftly and strongly.

"We are proud of our community cohesion. Through continuing to work and engage with our communities will will ensure they remain safe and are always protected.

"If you have any concerns, please feel able to contact your local policing teams, who will be happy to help. Additional patrols and police visibility have been arranged to help reassure you at this difficult time."

An online fundraising campaign has gained almost £55,000 in donations from the public for Mr Shah's family.
