Dozens of residents had to be evacuated in the middle of the night after a fire broke out in a block of converted flats in Glasgow.

Emergency services arrived at the scene on Stewartville Street in the Partick area of the city at around 12.15am on Sunday.

Thick smoke could be seen billowing from the third and fourth floors of the former St Peter's Boys School, with ten fire engines, five ambulances and numerous police vehicles in attendance.

It is thought the fire originated on the third floor of the building, although the exact circumstances of the blaze are still being investigated.

Fire crews worked through the night to extinguish the flames, with a cherry-picker used to reach the worst affected areas of the building.

Residents on the upper floors were forced to remain in their flats throughout due to the severity of the smoke accumulated in the stairwells.

Local resident Phil Hague, who lives on the second floor, spoke of his experience:

"We went to bed around twelve and half an hour later we heard some commotion above us and the guy above us shouting.

"We thought he had been robbed so we got our gear on and went to help our neighbour.

"As soon as we opened the front door there was thick smoke everywhere and firemen in their gas masks coming up the stairs.

"We made our way downstairs and by this time there were lots of people in their dressing gowns outside with eight fire engines and a lot of police.

"I personally didn't see anybody jumping from windows or anything but there were a few residents who were told to stay in their flat because it was too smoky to come out, I think.

"There was one guy who crawled out his first floor window and was standing on the roof of the main entrance, but no one was jumping from second or third floor windows that I saw.

"We had to stay at a friend's in the end and still haven't been given the all clear to return to our flat."

Around 30 people were evacuated in total, with a number of residents treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The Scottish Ambulance Service sent four resources from their special operations response team including two ambulances and an ambulance car.

A spokesperson said: "We did not transport anyone to hospital. We dealt with smoke inhalation."

Ambulance services were stood down after a number of hours, but fire crews remain in attendance as of 9.30am on Sunday morning.

A Police Scotland statement read: "At around 12.15am on Sunday April 24 a fire broke out within a communal area of flats on Stewartville Street, Glasgow.

"Police, fire and ambulance services attended the scene and 25-30 people were evacuated from the building.

"Four people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and other minor injuries and conditions but no one was taken to hospital.

"A joint investigation from police and fire services is currently under way to establish the cause of the fire."

Two fire crews were still at the scene at 11.30am on Sunday, with firefighters working to secure the building and check for structural damage.
