A teenager who stabbed his classmate four times with a scalpel after a dispute has avoided being sent to detention.

The 16-year-old attacker, who cannot be named for legal reasons, punched his 15-year-old victim near the school gates during an altercation.

Minutes later, further away from the school, he repeatedly stabbed his classmate with a scalpel stolen from class.

The injured teenager was given first aid back at the school before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

The attacker was soon apprehended by police after he had fled towards his home in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.

He later pleaded guilty to assault to injury and danger of life at Glasgow Sheriff Court on March 2, 2015.

Sheriff Aisha Anwar sentenced him to a community payback order with the condition he must carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community and will be supervised for two years.

He was also given an electronic tag for four months.
