Police appealed for assistance from a group of men who helped a woman after she was sexually assaulted in Glasgow city.

The 27-year-old victim was on Ingram Street, near the Jelly Bear cafe, at about 3.20am on Saturday when the attacker approached her and assaulted her.

Police said she managed to break free and seek help from a group of men across the road. They helped the woman get home.

Detectives are now urging the men to come forward to help with the investigation as they may hold vital information.

After the sexual assault, the suspect was seen heading along Ingram street towards the centre of Glasgow.

He is described as black, in his 20s, around 5ft 6in, of stocky build and with short black hair. He was wearing a dark jumper and jeans.

Detective constable Vhairi MacDonald said: "We are looking at CCTV footage from in and around Merchant City and the city centre in order to gain additional information.

"From our enquiries so far, we know that the young woman was assisted by a group of perhaps five men and it's important we speak to these men as I'm sure they have information which could assist our investigation.

"I am appealing directly to them to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency so that we can trace the man responsible for this crime."

Anyone with information has been asked to contact officers at city centre police office on 101, or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 where information can be given anonymously.
