A police officer has died after collapsing while attending an emergency call-out.

The 55-year-old officer, named locally as Dougie Wiggins, died after he took ill when he was called out to an incident in Newhouse, North Lanarkshire on Monday night.

He collapsed while attending the call at the Travel Inn on Edinburgh Road around 11.40pm.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance but died a shortly afterwards.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "At 11.40pm on Monday, May 2, whilst attending an emergency call at the Travel Inn on Edinburgh Road, a 55-year-old serving police officer took unwell and collapsed.

"He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where he sadly died a short time later.

"There are no suspicious circumstances."
