Students had to be evacuated after a chemical spillage in a university laboratory.

Emergency services were called to Glasgow University after one student became ill as a result of the incident at around 3pm on Wednesday.

Fire crews, paramedics and an environmental protection unit attended but it is understood the spillage was not serious and the student who fell unwell did not need hospital treatment.

However, students were evacuated from the laboratory and one was checked over by ambulance staff.

A spokesman for Glasgow University said: 'We can confirm that following an incident at one of our chemical laboratories a student was taken unwell."

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call shortly after 3pm reporting a spillage within the chemistry department.

" We sent crews from Yorkhill and Maryhill fire stations as well as a specialist environmental protection unit from Hamilton. There is no risk to the public."

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Around 3pm on Wednesday emergency services were called to a chemical spillage in the chemistry department within Glasgow University."
