A taxi driver was attacked and robbed after picking up two customers outside a train station.

The 38-year-old taxi driver picked up two men in his black Vauxhall Insignia on Sunday night from the rank outside Cumbernauld station in Lanarkshire.

As the car neared Alder Road, one of the men leaned over and struck the driver on the face and asked for money at around 10.30pm. They then made off with the driver's car keys but no money.

He was taken to Monklands Hospital where he was treated for a head injury before being released.

The first suspect is described as being 6ft tall, mid to late 20s, well-built with short dark hair and wearing jeans and a dark jumper. The other man is described as 5ft 9in tall, thin build with a gaunt appearance.

DC Thomas Kiernan, from Coatbridge CID, said: "The taxi driver had picked up two passengers at the taxi rank and was then subjected to an assault with the intent of robbing him of cash.

"The two suspects only managed to get the driver's car keys before making off towards Alder Lane and as a result, the taxi driver had to receive treatment for a face and head injury.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have seen the two suspects get into the taxi at the rank outside Cumbernauld train station or perhaps saw then run off towards Alder Lane at Alder Road.

"Anyone with information should contact officers at Coatbridge Police Office on 101."
