A baby girl has died in suspicious circumstances after falling ill at the family home.

The 14-month-old baby, named locally as Inayah Ahmed, was taken to hospital after an ambulance was called to the house in the north of Glasgow last month.

Doctors battled to save the child but she died three days later on April 20. It is understood she suffered damage to her brain.

A post-mortem examination has taken place and as a result, police are now treating the death as suspicious and have launched a major investigation. The incident happened on Bernside Drive in Drumchapel on April 17.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "On Sunday April 17, a 14-month-old girl was taken to the sick children's hospital after reportedly falling unwell within her home in Drumchapel, Glasgow.

"She died within the hospital on April 20. Police are treating the death as suspicious and inquiries are ongoing. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

An online fundraising campaign has also been launched in memory of Inayah and has reached almost £1300 in donations since it was created on May 4. The page aims to raise cash for Medical Aid for Palestine (MAP).

The page reads: "On the 20th of April our beloved Inayah went back to our creator. She was the life and soul of the family.

"Without her laughter and antics, everything seems so dull. But Inayah left us with many lessons in her short space of time with us.

"One of them being to hold each and every one of your family members close to your heart.

"In memory of Inayah I want to make a difference to the lives of other children who may not have the benefits of the health care that we take for granted."
