Hundreds of mourners gathered for the funeral of a popular 13-year-old schoolgirl who collapsed during a PE lesson.

Friends and neighbours were asked by the grieving family of Kiera Beagle to wear purple in her memory at the service on Thursday.

The funeral came after hundreds of her classmates from Calderhead High in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, and friends released purple balloons outside her school in her memory.

The service was held at Calderhead Erskine Church in Shotts.

Reverend Allan Brown, who led the service, opened with a speech Kiera had made at Stane Primary School to encourage her peers to vote for her as vice-captain.

Reading back the speech, he said: "My name is Kiera and I would like to be in the pupil leadership team because I have good thinking and listening skills.

"I've sorted out a few arguments at home, I'm honest and I like helping people. I try my best to cheer anyone up if they're sad or angry.

"I'm stuck at some things, I read the question over and over to find out what it means.

"I have a positive attitude towards adults and I'm very good with children. At my house I look after my brothers and sisters even though they mess up my room. I guess that's what brothers and sisters do.

"That's why I would like to be vice-captain, because I like being there for people, make them happy, I will never give up and wouldn't let anyone down. Please vote for me."

Kiera collapsed at her school gym hall on May 26. Teachers attempted to save her life using the school's defibrillator before she was lifted by air ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. She was pronounced dead later that day.

At the service, her friend Dillon was left in tears as he read a warm tribute to the "always smiling" school girl.

He said: "Kiera was great. There's no other way to describe her. She was always happy and there was never a dull moment and she could lighten the mood anywhere, anytime.

"Kiera was always smiling and cheered people up. She never prejudged and always spoke of friends and family fondly. She was a natural friend and was never ever shy.

"She was a kind friend, a loving daughter and granddaughter. We'll miss her. We'll miss her laugh. We'll miss her smile. We'll miss her friendship"
