Detectives are probing a possible link between the discovery of a body at a house and a caravan blaze which left a man seriously injured.

A woman was found dead in Stewarton, East Ayrshire, at around 6.20am on Thursday after police were called out to a property in the town.

About an hour earlier, fire crews and emergency services were called out to a caravan park at Peacockbank Farm, less than a mile from where the woman was found on Crusader Crescent, and found a man seriously injured.

They arrived at around 5.15am on Thursday and found a 50-year-old man with serious burn injuries and a caravan ablaze.

STV understands one line of inquiry being looked at by police is that both incidents are linked.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 50-year-old man was found nearby suffering from serious burns.

"He was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital where medical staff describe his condition as serious."

The woman's death is being treated as unexplained and it is expected a post mortem examination will take place on Thursday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "The woman is still to be formally identified and the death is currently being treated as unexplained.

"A post-mortem will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death."
